2023 MGC Season in Review

The season officially began as both 2021 and 2022 with The Master of the Meadows tournament – April 8 was a day to dust off the clubs and clean off the rust of the Winter season. Many played and a few competed for their photoshoot modeling the MGC “Green Jacket”. Our 2023 champion was Matt Sluiter. We hope he’ll be around to defend and drape the new champion for his photo. Surely inaugural 2021 champ Mike Lor and hoping that 2022 champ Dylan Beaumont will be there as well. Save the Date! April 13, 2024 … rain, snow, or shine – the Green Jacket and the 2024 Master of the Meadows are up for grabs.

An added bonus: dining in the newly opened clubhouse / restaurant… It took just a wee season short of a dozen years to reopen but we finally cleared the final bureaucratic hurdles and started serving food and drink in our new clubhouse. My corporate 9-5 job paid the bills but kept us from serving food seven days a week – we served our Men’s league and the public Wednesday nights and served our award winning BBQ and sides every weekend. For 2024 … I celebrate my 65th birthday in February and with that have decided to cast my corporate shackles aside. I will be dedicating all of my time to both the golf course AND the All American BBQ so I hope that you will join us to make 2024 the best season ever!

Our Men’s league kicked off on the first Wednesday in May. Fourteen two man teams played a weekly schedule that concluded after Labor Day with our banquet featuring 20 oz. Bone-in Porterhouse Steaks, tasty sides and salads, and tiramisu dessert. On a sad note Dan O’Neil, who played each and every year of our Men’s League, passed away at the end of June but was capably substituted by his close friend Tom Squires – hope you’ll be back with us in ‘24, Tom! Mike Chevy returned to play for Larry Hull while Larry rehabbed his new bionic hip – Mitch and Mike were a formidable duo in 2023 and I’m sure that while we’re all looking forward to seeing Larry back on the course in 2024 we’re also hoping Mike Chevy can find his way back into the fold again. It was a fabulously competitive season with a 4 team, 3 week, round robin at the conclusion of the season resulting in the closest one-two finish in league history – After 16 matches Dustin Hall and Casey Sidorowicz edged out 2023 champs Jamie Wilson and Christopher Stevens by TWO points. (Maybe Dustin is right to never concede a putt)

In June we once again hosted the Arkville Fire Departments annual fundraising two player scramble. Tom and Cody Rieder took top honors. In 2024 we expect to host again and will almost certainly be catering the best post-tournament feed right here at MGC. Hope you’ll consider joining this well run fun tournament for a good cause in June (and the many other events we’ll conduct … 2 club tournament, East Branch team championship, movie nights, etc.! )

In conclusion, thank you for your continued patronage and support – we had some rough spells (pun intended) in 2023 but a number of interventions: e.g. (1) the purchase of our 50” Dixie Chopper (2) the acquisition of a second Jake F10 rough mower (3) the fabrication of a dedicated turf sprayer… when combined with my 24×7 dedication to MGC should work to enable playing conditions that exceed (or are at least up to) both mine and your standards in 2024. I’d also like to build a grounds (and restaurant/catering) staff organically as cash flows allow so if you’re interested in working some shifts with us (or know some capable hands) please let us know.

Finally… Men’s League Match 16 scorecards: Here you go, Larry!
